was brought to hospital on the morning of t'he 7th May 1926, with his tongue enormously swollen. The history was that this condition had started insidiously the previous night. So enormously swollen was the tongue that the boy could not completely close his mouth, and it was impossible to see the back of his throat. Respiration was carried on through the nose, and was 26 per minute, while the pulse ranged between 96 to 100 and the temperature was 100?F. The patient had very dirty teeth. An acute streptococcal infection was feared. There was a good deal of salivation. In spite all this, however, the patient did not appear to be greatly distressed.
